How long does probiotics last? Fridge, freezer & pantry
Unopened, probiotics keep in the fridge for 4 weeks. Once opened, use them within about 4 weeks for best quality and safety.
| Fridge | about 4 weeks |
|---|---|
| Freezer | Not recommended |
| Pantry (room temp) | Not recommended |
| After opening | about 4 weeks (refrigerated) |
Times are for unopened, properly stored probiotics and reflect best quality. Always use your senses and follow any date on the package.
Signs probiotics has gone bad
- Off or rancid smell (especially fish-oil and seed-based supplements).
- Discolouration, crumbling, or a changed texture.
- Moisture or clumping inside the bottle.
When in doubt, throw it out — the cost of a spoiled meal isn't worth the risk.
Best way to store probiotics
Keep supplements in their original sealed bottle in a cool, dry place away from light and humidity — the bathroom cabinet is usually too humid. Some (probiotics, fish oil) keep best refrigerated; check the label.
