How long does honey last? Fridge, freezer & pantry

Unopened, honey keeps in the pantry for around 2 years. Once opened, use it within about 1 year for best quality and safety.

Times are for unopened, properly stored honey and reflect best quality. Always use your senses and follow any date on the package.

Signs honey has gone bad

  • Off, stale, or rancid smell (nuts and fats inside can turn).
  • Mould, stickiness, or an unusual texture.
  • A white 'bloom' on chocolate is harmless, but discard anything mouldy.

When in doubt, throw it out — the cost of a spoiled meal isn't worth the risk.

Best way to store honey

Keep sweets in a cool, dry place in airtight packaging. Honey is essentially shelf-stable — if it crystallises, gently warm it. Chocolate keeps best somewhere cool and dark, not the fridge, to avoid sugar bloom.
