How long does flaxseed oil last? Fridge, freezer & pantry
Unopened, flaxseed oil keeps in the fridge for 2 months. Once opened, use it within about 4 weeks for best quality and safety.
| Fridge | about 2 months |
|---|---|
| Freezer | Not recommended |
| Pantry (room temp) | Not recommended |
| After opening | about 4 weeks (refrigerated) |
Times are for unopened, properly stored flaxseed oil and reflect best quality. Always use your senses and follow any date on the package.
Signs flaxseed oil has gone bad
- Rancid, paint-like, or bitter smell — the main sign oil has turned.
- Cloudiness or sediment (some is normal when cold; rancidity is not).
- Off or stale taste.
When in doubt, throw it out — the cost of a spoiled meal isn't worth the risk.
Best way to store flaxseed oil
Keep oils in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat and light, which speed up rancidity. Seal tightly after use. Some delicate oils (flaxseed especially) keep longest in the fridge.
