Times are for unopened, properly stored flaxseed oil and reflect best quality. Always use your senses and follow any date on the package.

Signs flaxseed oil has gone bad

  • Rancid, paint-like, or bitter smell — the main sign oil has turned.
  • Cloudiness or sediment (some is normal when cold; rancidity is not).
  • Off or stale taste.

When in doubt, throw it out — the cost of a spoiled meal isn't worth the risk.

Best way to store flaxseed oil

Keep oils in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat and light, which speed up rancidity. Seal tightly after use. Some delicate oils (flaxseed especially) keep longest in the fridge.
